What To Pack
If you go camping or outdoors often like I do or feel that someday you may need to flee do a natural disaster or man made problems, no matter the case here are some of the items I feel everyone should have in their Ready Bag! The items you need will most likely always change depending on your location and time of the year but there will always be the core items that are generally consistent everywhere and always.
A Knife - you will need a good knife for the various tasks that you may face - I recommend the Mora Companion which you can find for around $15 which makes it very affordable. I personally own and recommend this product. If you are looking for something larger then I recommend the Becker BK2, best knife I have ever had!
Water Purification Method(s) - Water equals life so, its pretty easy to see why you need to be able to make/collect safe drinking water. which there are many methods including boiling and filtering. I recommend getting a 100 % stainless steel container that you can boil water in, got mine at Walmart for $5. I recommend the Survivor Filter for filtering water, I own both of their models and drank straight from the Ohio river with them.
Shelter - 2 options here really know how to build your own or buy one. Either option you choose I recommend carrying a tarp, some paracord, and at the least a hammock for times you don't feel like building a shelter and your up off the ground away from whatever crawls on the ground.
Navigation - Navigation is very important and the first thing you need to know is your area, don’t just sit in the house if you haven’t done any exploring so get out drive around and know your area the best you can. the basic items you need are a map of your area and a good liquid filled compass. You also need to learn how to read both of those items. If you want to take it further you can get a handheld GPS device and some 2 way radios for your group if you have one.
Medical Kit - Medical Kits are a must, simply because you never know when something is going to happen and where you will be at when it does. To start off, your kit should have your prescribed medication in it, or you MUST remember to grab it before you go on trips or decide to flee. After that get all the basics like gauze, bandages, various ointments and cremes, disposable gloves, tourniquet, quick clot, ace bandage, medical tape, hand sanitizer, hand wipes, super glue, nail clippers, scissors, hemostats, or whatever else you see fit.
Light Source - A good quality flashlight is a life saver and an absolute to me. There are many, many, many, options out there from solar, battery powered, crank powered, and even one you shake to charge. I have a solar one by Hybrid Light and many battery powered but the solar is probably my favorite because it also charges mobile devices as well. they have tons of battery powered ones that use every battery out there, It good to have a few that use the same battery but also have other options because you never know what kind of batteries you will find if you flee for some time.
Fire Kit - Probably my favorite kit because nothing beats sitting by the fire with no worries. There are a TON of different fire starting methods out there but as long as you have a few options then you will be good to go. A Bic lighter is of course something you need and they last for a long time. Some of the methods I use are Vaseline cotton balls, ferro rod, Wetfire, Live Fire, fatwood, a magnifying glass, and jute twine. Other methods include using a bow drill, a fire piston, hand drill, hand sanitizer, and char cloth.
Food - What you pack for food will all depend on your skill set, if you hunt, forage for food, and fish then you will be able get food on the go more than likely. If you don't that means you would need to carry more, and extra weight is bad and eventually that supply will run out. You should pack some items though, it all depends on your taste but items like MRE's, dehydrated foods, and so on are a good idea to have but be ready to get your own food as well.
