Food Preps
Keep It Simple!
When a lot of people think about food preps, they may think that it’s some difficult thing to handle but it really isn’t! It’s very simple, in fact you should do what the resturant industry all around the world does. It’s called FIFO, meaning first in, first out. This is to make sure that the freshest items get pushed to the back of your shelfs/cabinets so that you use the older food preps first to prevent them from going bad.
Build up your food preps
Building up your food preps slowly at first is easy, Just add a few extra items like 5lb bag of rice, canned goods, bouillon cubes, and other items with a long shelf life. This way it isn’t really hurting your wallet with a lot of items being purchased at once and is spread out over the course of your normal grocery store visits.
Alternative Cooking Methods
In emergency situations you won’t always have the ability to cook using the normal methods so it can be really benefical to think about alternative methods such as the one pictured, using some small candles and a muffin pan. Use several candles to get your pan or pot up to a safe temperature to cook or use a lesser amount to simply warm up already prepared food for just the better experience of having a hot meal will be a mentally benefical things that can boost your moral even when situations aren’t ideal. Some other methods of alternative cooking methods would be using sterno heaters and of course putting your camp cooking gear to use when possible.
Growing Herbs, fruits, and vegatables.
Learning how to properly garden now adds tremendous freshness and flavor that mass produced fruits and vegetables just cannot achieve. When you grow or eat your very first small garden grown tomato for example, you will understand exactly what I mean. Also fresh grown herbs will give you the ability to add some great extra flavor without having to rely on or dealing with seasonings and spices that otherwise would expire or at the very least, lose all of their flavors in time. It’s a great idea to go ahead and learn how to garden now, and even collect your favorite seeds, or even seeds that produce easy to grow items that are low effort growers.
Extend your food preps!
There is nothing more important than making the food you stock up on extend as far as it can. An easy way to do this for example is too add some cooked rice to items like soup mixes to basically double the amount of food you will be consuming, while not adding much cost, and not diluting the flavor of what you are eating. Whether it be for a solo survivor or a family/group, this is something that will help everyone get the most out of their food preps!
Learning to cook with your food preps
Cooking from scratch is a skill that will help you get more flavorful, healthier food, and save you money compared to using only prepackaged items. You can also do a mixture of fresh and prepackaged items as well, and you can continue to do this if you are able to grow your own garden even when things turn bad. I would take time to look up how to make things from scratch like breads, sauces, pastas, and a lot more. If you don’t already do this, you will find that many recipes are actually a lot simpler than they may appear.
